Building a Core Team: The Heartbeat of Kids Ministry

Kids ministry isn’t a solo mission. It’s a calling that requires a team, but not just any team. It takes a core team. A group of people who don’t just serve but carry the heart and vision of the ministry.

We have 60 volunteers who faithfully pour into the next generation, but there are 10 we keep especially close. These aren’t just leaders. They are family. We do life together, we meet monthly, we disciple each other, we’re vulnerable, and we worship side by side.

This core team isn’t built on skill. It’s built on trust, relationship, and shared vision.

Why a Core Team?

Ministry isn’t just about systems. It’s about souls. We can have the best structure, the most engaging curriculum, and the biggest events, but without a core team that carries the weight with us, we will burn out.

Jesus had the crowds. He had the 72. But He kept 12 close. And even within that, He had 3 who walked with Him through His most intimate moments. If Jesus needed a core team, so do we.

How We Build Our Core Team

  1. Do Life Together.

Ministry is more than a Sunday commitment. We share meals, celebrate birthdays, and walk through struggles together.

2. Meet Monthly.

Not just to plan, but to pour into each other. We disciple, we equip, we sharpen. These meetings aren’t about tasks. They’re about transformation.

3. Commit To Vulnerability.

Leadership isn’t about pretending to have it all together. Being open and vulnerable builds trust. We create a safe space where we can be honest, pray for one another, and remind each other that we are not alone.

4. Worship Together.

Before we lead others into God’s presence, we need to dwell there ourselves. Worship isn’t something we do. It’s who we are. We love to spend time in moments of worshipping Jesus with each other.

5. Love Them for Who They Are, Not What They Do.

Our core team knows they are valued not because of how much they serve, but because of who they are. Their worth isn’t in their role. It’s in their identity as sons and daughters of God.

Leaders Carry Culture

Culture isn’t taught. It’s caught. These 10 leaders set the tone for the other 50. If they are strong, healthy, and spiritually filled, the entire team thrives. But if they are exhausted, burned out, and disconnected, it will trickle down.

That’s why we invest in them first. We pour into them, so they can pour into others.

Culture isn’t built by accident. It’s built when a team carries a shared vision for who we will be.

Our vision for our LC Kids Core Team is: As the LC Kids Core Team, we are fully committed to pursuing and embracing the presence of God in every interaction with each other, our volunteers, and our kids. This passion drives everything we do.

What About You?

Who are your 10? Who are the ones you can link arms with and say, “We’re in this together”? If you don’t have them yet, start praying for them. They don’t need to be the most skilled. They just need to have the right heart.

Build a core team, and you’ll build a ministry that lasts.
