Family Meeting: Deep Conversations That Shape For Eternity

Our living room isn’t just for scrolling phones or background TV noise. It’s where we gather as a family. With Bibles and journals in hand to slow down, listen, and talk. Not shallow talk, but deep conversations about God, life, and all the stuff in between.

This isn’t a lecture. It’s a rhythm.

It’s how we teach our kids that following Jesus isn’t something we do on Sunday mornings. It’s the heartbeat of our home.

Why We Bring Bibles and Journals

Deuteronomy 6:6–7 says, “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home…”

That’s exactly what our family meetings do.

Bringing Bibles and journals sets the tone. “We expect God to speak.” Writing it down teaches our kids to treasure His voice, not just hear it and forget.

We’re modeling a rhythm they can carry for life.

An Example From Our Last Meeting

At our most recent family meeting, we opened our Bibles together and landed on the topic of suffering. Not an easy conversation for kids but a necessary one.

Earlier in the week, there was something huge that happened. Charlie Kirk was assassinated at one of his rallies. The topic came up so we talked about it. There were so many emotions such as sadness, confusion, even anger. Honestly, it’s the kind of topic that probably would’ve gone unspoken if we didn’t have our family meetings.

Because we had already created a safe space around God’s Word, we were able to process it together. We talked about how suffering can actually be a form of worship when choosing to trust Jesus when it’s hard. Then we asked:

“What has the Holy Spirit been speaking to you lately?”

“Where have you seen Him working in our family or in the earth?”

The answers amazed me. Even our youngest shared. In that moment, our living room became more than a room. It became holy ground. The Holy Spirit was discipling our family through our own conversation.

Why This Matters

When you create a rhythm of family meetings, you’re teaching your kids:

  • God’s Word applies to real life.
  • Listening to the Holy Spirit is normal.
  • Worship isn’t just singing. It’s surrender.
  • Faith isn’t a Sunday event. It’s a lifestyle.

We’re not raising kids who can quote verses but don’t know His voice. We’re raising kids whose hearts burn for Jesus because they’ve met Him at home.

How to Start Your Own Family Meeting

  • Pick a Time and Guard It. Even 15 minutes is powerful.
  • Bring Bibles and Journals. Show your kids God’s Word is serious.
  • Pray Before You Begin. Invite the Holy Spirit to lead.
  • Ask Heart Questions. “What is God saying?” “Where do you see Him moving?”
  • Write Down What He Speaks. Teach them to treasure His voice.

It won’t be perfect. Some weeks will feel awkward. Some will feel like breakthrough. But over time, this rhythm will anchor your kids in truth and teach them to live a Spirit-led life.

Final Thoughts

Parents, your living room can be a place where kids scroll and drift or a place where kids hear and obey. Family meetings are one of the simplest, most powerful ways to anchor them in Jesus. Don’t underestimate ordinary moments in ordinary spaces.

When you open your Bible, grab your journal, and invite your kids into deep conversations. You’re not just filling time. You’re shaping eternity.

Revival doesn’t start in the sanctuary. It starts in your living room. And it starts with you.
