Jesus modeled simplicity in ministry. He used everyday moments, like walking along a road or sharing a meal, to teach profound truths. He didn’t rely on elaborate plans or distractions. Instead, He invited people into His presence.
Matthew 19:14 reminds us of Jesus’ heart for children: “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”
When we overfill our services, we unintentionally hinder kids from coming to Jesus. Less is often more when it comes to making space for Holy Spirit to speak and move.
Kids Don’t Need a Show. They Need the Savior

One of the greatest misunderstandings in kids’ ministry is that we need to entertain kids to keep their attention. But the truth is, kids are hungry for something real.
They don’t need a show. They need the Savior. They need to know that God is powerful, personal, and present in their lives.
When we rely too heavily on games, props, or flashy moments, we may inadvertently teach kids that these things are the centerpiece of their faith. Instead, let’s point them to the unshakable truth of who God is.
Creating Space for God to Move
Here are some practical ways to create space for God to move in your kids’ ministry:
1. Leave Room in the Schedule:
Build intentional pauses into your services. Instead of rushing from one activity to the next, allow time for worship, prayer, or quiet reflection.
2. Prioritize Worship and Prayer:
Kids can experience God’s presence just as much as adults. Make worship and prayer a central part of your services, not just an afterthought.
3. Teach Kids to Listen to God:
Encourage kids to take a few moments to be still and ask God to speak to them. Help them understand that they can hear His voice, even at a young age.
4. Focus on the Word of God:
Kids don’t need a watered-down gospel. They need the truth of Scripture. Let God’s Word take priority in your lessons and discussions.
5. Trust Holy Spirit:
Remember, Holy Spirit is the ultimate teacher and guide. Trust Him to do the work in kids’ hearts as you make room for Him.
Less Anxiety, More Peace
Overloaded schedules can create anxiety. Not just for you, but for the kids you serve. A constantly packed program can leave kids feeling overwhelmed and overstimulated.
When we slow down and simplify, we create an atmosphere of peace. Kids need to know that church is a place where they can rest in God’s presence, not just a place where they’re kept busy.
Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
By doing less, we invite God’s peace into our services, allowing kids to experience His presence in a powerful way.
A Final Word of Encouragement
As leaders, we often feel the pressure to make every service or event “perfect.” But perfection isn’t the goal. Making room for God is the goal.
Kids need to know that God is big enough to meet their needs, calm their fears, and guide their lives. They need space to experience His love and power in a way that changes their hearts.
When we step back and do less, we create room for God to do infinitely more than we ever could. Let’s lead with humility, trust Holy Spirit, and watch as He moves in ways we could never imagine or explain.
Your role isn’t to be the source of every answer or the creator of every moment. Your role is to be a guide. Someone who points kids to Jesus and gives them the space to encounter Him.
So, take a deep breath. Simplify. Make room. Revival doesn’t come from packed schedules, it comes from hearts surrendered to God.
Let’s do less and let God do more.
