The Family Altar: Revival Starts At Home

We often hear about revival breaking out in churches or sweeping across communities, but the truth is, revival begins long before it’s seen in public. It starts in the quiet, sacred space of our homes. As parents, God has given us a profound calling: to be the first and most influential voices of faith in our children’s lives.

If we want to see a generation rise up unshakable in their faith, we must embrace the truth that revival begins with us. It starts in our homes, around our tables, and in the everyday moments of life.

What Revival Looks Like at Home

Revival isn’t just a church event or a powerful worship service. It’s a movement of hearts fully surrendered to God. And for our kids, it starts with what they see and experience in us.

Revival is prayer: Do your kids see you turning to God in every season? Prayer is the heartbeat of a revived home, and it doesn’t have to be complicated. Let them hear you pray over them, pray with them, and pray for the world around them.

Revival is worship: Worship isn’t confined to Sunday mornings. It’s a lifestyle. Create an atmosphere where worship is woven into the fabric of your home. Whether through music, thanksgiving, or simply pausing to recognize God’s goodness.

Revival is living the Word: Kids don’t just learn from what we say. They learn from how we live. When we anchor our lives in God’s Word, they see the power of Scripture come alive. Show them what it means to live by faith, even when it’s not easy.

Leading the Next Generation Starts with You

It’s easy to think revival is someone else’s job. We may look to a pastor, a youth leader, or a ministry team. But as parents, we are the first pastors our kids will ever know. They’re watching how we handle challenges, how we prioritize our time, and how we respond to God.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 says, “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

God’s design has always been for parents to disciple their kids. We’re not called to be perfect parents, but we are called to be faithful ones. We are called to be parents who point their kids to Jesus at every turn.

Practical Steps to Spark Revival at Home

1. Make Time for God Together:

Set aside time as a family to read the Bible, pray, and talk about God. It doesn’t have to be formal just consistent.

2. Create a Culture of Encouragement:

Speak life over your kids. Remind them of who God says they are and encourage them to seek His voice for themselves.

3. Model a Heart After God:

Let your kids see your love for God in action. Whether it’s serving others, forgiving quickly, or trusting God in hard times, your example will leave a lasting impact.

4. Teach Them to Hear God’s Voice:

Revival happens when kids experience God for themselves. Teach them to listen for His voice in prayer, in Scripture, and in their everyday lives.

5. Pray for Revival Daily:

Pray over your home, your children, and their future. Ask God to spark a fire in their hearts that will carry them through life.

Encountering Jesus At Home Matters

On August 27, 2018, as we were finishing dinner, the kids asked if we could have a time of worship before bed. It was just five minutes until bedtime, but how could I say no to their request? I agreed, saying, “Yes, but only for 15 minutes.” Little did I know what God had in store. As we began worshiping, the atmosphere shifted, and the presence of God became tangible. Aliyah, who was 9 at the time, started crying and calling out, “Jesus.” Then Alexeah, who was just 6, began crying as well. They were encountering God! What was meant to be 15 minutes turned into an hour and a half. It all happened because we chose to make room for Jesus to move.

It’s one thing for our kids to know about Jesus. It’s another for them to encounter Him personally. When we allow Holy Spirit to move in our homes, we create a space where our children don’t just hear stories about God’s power, but they experience it firsthand. They witness His faithfulness in answered prayers, feel His peace in difficult moments, and learn to recognize His voice.

A child who encounters Jesus at home won’t just rely on Sunday school lessons or church experiences to sustain their faith. They will have a foundation built on a real, personal relationship with Him. These encounters will shape their identity, their decisions, and their purpose.

When Jesus is central in our homes, our kids will grow up knowing that He isn’t just someone we talk about on Sundays. He’s the One who walks with us daily, who speaks to our hearts, and who leads us in every season of life.

A Revival That Lasts

Revival at home isn’t about grand gestures or perfect moments. It’s about cultivating a deep, consistent relationship with God and inviting your kids to do the same.

When we allow Holy Spirit to move in our homes, our kids won’t just know about God. They’ll encounter Him. They’ll see His faithfulness, experience His love, and carry His truth into the world.

Let’s not wait for someone else to spark revival. Let’s be the ones who start it right here, right now, in our homes. When parents rise up and take hold of this calling, we’ll see a generation of kids who are bold, unshakable, and on fire for God.

Because revival doesn’t start in a church building or tent service. It starts at home, with us.

Let’s light the fire!
